10th of Awesome (post 4)

I am late, shut up.

I love musicals. This has probably lost me cool points, but I don't care! And I am going to post some snippets of some musicals so that, if interested, you can check out your local library for the goods.

First, as many people who have talked to me recently might know, I'm gaga over the revival of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins. It's a wonderful, chilling criticism of the American Dream and our society in general. Sadly, the really good stuff isn't on youtube, but there is a generalized song from it that really gives a feel for how the musical is.

<lj-embed id="7" />

Quotes I Loved:

"Everybody's got the right to some sunshine! Not the sun but maybe one of its beams."

"You can always get your prize. You can always get your dream. Sure, the mailman won the lottery."

"Just some left wing foreigner that's my guess--"
"No left! You think I am left? No left, no right, no anything! Only American! Zangara have nothing, no luck, no girl, Zangara no smart, no school, but Zangara no foreign tool, Zangara American! American nothing! And why there no photographers? For Zangara no photographers! Only capitalists get photographers! No care! Pull switch!"

The Wild Party is based on a modernist poem and in fact, had two rival productions of two very different plays come out at the same time! I liked what I heard of both versions, and honestly the video that's the least good is from my preferred musical. Funny how that works.

The LaChiusa production is, from what I've heard, a lot more true to the poem than the other production is. The music is a lot more jazz-influenced, which sounds great and wonderful and if you see me in real life you ought to ask to borrow it! It is so good. I think the actual song choices for this little preview are poor, because they aren't as lively or manic until the very end, and while there are its fair share of slow, melancholy song, it's also a party. Anyway! You should look for it, as it is awesome.

Also, Mandy Patinkin, famous for his Inego Montoya

<lj-embed id="8" />

The other version has the same basic plot, but goes in a different direction. I haven't heard the whole album, to be honest, but I've heard a couple and I really like them. Burrs, an obsessive clown actor, is so creepy and heartbreaking in this. The actor does a really good job of capturing the audience, which is impressive because, while sympathetic, he is also a real sleezeball. Kate is loads of fun, and well, I just love this time period in general so two musicals are great!

<lj-embed id="9" />
<lj-embed id="10" />
<lj-embed id="11" />
<lj-embed id="12" />

If you only watch one, watch the last one. It is my absolute favorite!

Favorite Quotes:

"He says he'll die for you, well, don't you want to know don't you want to know? Will he really die for you, or is that just the after-dinner show?"

"How many grils have let me down? How many girls would love a clown?"

Sweeny Todd was something my dad discovered for me when I was home sick in high school, and have since become obsessed. I've seen, in some form or another, every incarnation of Sweeny Todd, and have loved each and every one for different things. It's dark and twisted and set in a time period I also really like, plus good music, so what's not to like? I have clips from the original and revival productions (I love youtube).

<lj-embed id="13" />
<lj-embed id="14" />
<lj-embed id="15" />
<lj-embed id="16" />

There are lots of fun quotes from Sweeny Todd so I'm not going to look them up!

Les Miserables is my forevergirl. I fell in love when I was maybe eight years old, and love it as much, if not more, today. It's lush and rich and moving and complex and the music is gorgeous. And, I don't care if you don't like musicals, hearing 17 international Jean Val-Jean actors sing "One Day More" with the all-star dream cast is just about the most amazing musical thing you can experience. And I will share it with you now:

<lj-embed id="17" />

And that's my 10th of Awesome! Belated, but still, I hope you enjoyed :)

Something I wrote in my Imaginative Writing class that I actually kinda liked? And the professor liked it too so that always gives me confidence. PS this is not from my perspective, in case there are any concerns:

Swingset (a case of abuse)

I am not strong and

I was never very good with show and tell but

I am good with

balance

good as in I know that

one and one is two and two and two is four and

that if Farmer Joe has four apples on his left

and six apples on his right

he needs to move one in order to make

it even

keeping things even—keeping a balance—is important

all the books say so:

to be zen

find your center

balance your life

“all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”

The Law of Hammurabi

Hammurabi would be proud

for my relationships are built upon his design

an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth and

an ear for an ear though

in these modern times I am asked to

approximate

(stonings are not appropriate but a tongue can work just as well)

I love my husband completely and absolutely and

I feel the same for my friends and family but

a swing

cannot go only forward it must come back.

If you have tips/thoughts/questions, hit me!
dear brain

Anxiety. I hate to say this, but I'm breaking up with you. This is the second day in a row you've kept me in bed until much later than I'd wanted to be. It's sweet, really, but I have far too much to do to only just be getting in the shower at 3:00 in the afternoon. Laying in bed with you, thinking about everything I should be doing, is just not something I want from our relationship.

Don't blame yourself. It's not you, it's me. We are just two very different people.

But honestly, pack your things. I'm going to enjoy this year.

I didn't realize until after Imaginative Writing today that I get panic attacks when I speak up in a classroom setting. That explains the rapid heartbeat, paranoia, difficulty speaking and the helpless shaking. To think, I'd always chalked it up to regular nerves!
10th of Awesome (post 3)

So, the 10th of September is upon us, and once again my 10th of Awesome is sadly scraping the end of the day. HOWEVER I love the things I am about to post, so it's okay.

The Cat Piano is a short animated piece by The People's Republic of Animation. I love this animation, and when in doubt I will have it playing almost constantly. The narration and the animation and the direction are all very well done, and it's just...very solid to me. It's free, and definitely worth a watch.

Next is Electric Car by a band called They Might Be Giants. They Might Be Giants is making an album-dvd release geared towards children called Here Comes Science. I will admit, when I see computer animation, this is the type I'm really attracted to: lots of tactile layers and moving puppets and cute things. It's an incredibly addictive and catchy song, and the animation is just adorable. And, as lame as it might sound, it actually kinda gives me hope for the future, to know some kids out there will grow up loving these kinds of songs.

And finally, I would like for everyone to watch Sarah Haskins. Sarah Haskins has a segment called Target Women, where she looks at trends in the media(specifically commercials) and how it's geared at women, and the problems that come from it. She is hilarious and you won't be able to help but dwell on what she says. She is my favorite feminist comedian.

I hope you guys enjoy, as I find these all awesome.

nothing of any substance

I have missed my livejournal, and posting within my livejournal. But I have nothing really to post about, except a failed stuffed animal pillow that has been 95% finished for three days now, but I can't bring myself to finish because it looks so stupid. What to do?

Whip out a meme, of course:

This is when you get to ask me anything. I mean anything, this time -- fandom things, real life things, things you think you should know, things you think I should have told you a long time ago. Anonymous posting is completely allowed. This post is unlocked, so anything that is too personal will not be answered.

I doubt there will be much that I will refuse to answer, but I do reserve the right to respond in a stupid manner for 99% of all responses.

Wow has time gone by. I'm currently in training to be a Resident Advisor, and the schedule they keep us at is very brutal. Luckily for me I have really awesome people in my life who are doing super nice things for me. For example!

squidattack did this awesome watercolor drawing for me that I fully intend to frame and hang on a wall someday. I love it so so much.

Then spiderstars made me two icons that are so amazing. The only thing that makes it better is that they're icons of things she's drawn for ME. Plus she's working on an ass-kicking Ryxen story that is going to be amazing when finished.

Then my BF drew me something awesome too

I am so lucky to have awesome people in my life. Awesome people who flatter me and my vanity by drawing purdy pictures of me. My day is so much better!

10th of Awesome (post 2)

I pimp Pushing Daisies and Being Human as awesome TV shows for the tenth of awesome. Reasons and more words will come later when I have time!

Edit: I have a little time! And thus, pimping.

Pushing Daisies

Pushing Daisies is a vibrant, colorful, utterly gorgeous show about dead things. Or rather, a morose awkward guy who can bring the dead back for exactly one minute without any consequences (after that one life has to be traded for another life and it's a random proximity thing). Ned proceeds to be blackmailed into helping a private investigator solve cases and collect the reward money.

I don't know which thing to squee more about--how utterly gorgeous and colorful it all is, or over how each character is so fun and interesting and enjoyable. I love every single one, and it's just about the cutest show you can watch about death that will leave you feeling so happy afterwards. And, often, hungry. Specifically for pie.

Sadly, Pushing Daisies suffered badly from the writer's strike, and as such was canceled after only two seasons. I've only seen the first, but I can only assume it's as fun and lovely and warm-hearted as the first season. You can find it online at both surfthecannel and, for those concerned about legality, on the WB.

Being Human

Being Human has the premise of what sounds like a bad joke: "a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost are living together in an apartment..." but it is really fun and heartfelt. I love all of the characters, and they all manage to have angst and be upset about their respective conditions without getting into a big melodramatic fit. They all care about each other, and if there's one thing I'm a sucker for it's caring and mocking friendships, which the three main characters (Annie, Mitchel and George) have in spades. It's British, it's just starting now, and it's very fun. Links to come soon!

boring life update

This past week has been awesome. Drove up to BG, listened to Art Spiegelman talk about comics with Eric and Jessi, proceeded to scare Jory and Geneva away, worked making a comic for the library, read Swallow Me Whole by Nate Powell, spent more time with Eric and Jessi, planned stuff for comic club this year, had a Fantasia viewing with Eric/Jessi/Geneva/Jory, coffee (by which I mean hot chocolate) with Catey and then the drive back. I was all nerves on the way up, but on the way back the drive was actually pretty peaceful.

It's rained all day today, which meant I got a day off from work. So I spent my time buying comics online and shopping for a dress for my cousin's wedding. Just as I was starting to lose heart and be all "BWLAHHHG I AM FAT AND HAVE WEIRD LUMPS NOTHING WILL LOOK GOOD ON MEEEE" I found two adorable dresses at American Eagle that I proceeded to buy. ALWAYS IN THE NICK OF TIME, AMERICAN EAGLE! Classy.

So...yes! I'm quite happy as of right now :)

Today I have a dentist's appointment, work, and then I'm driving up to Bowling Green for the week. It looks to be a lot of fun, just so long as I don't crash and die on the drive up there! First time driving that long a distance :I

See everyone on the flipside!

10th of Awesome (post 1)

Today I've decided to share some artists who I find particularly amazing. I love their work and when I see that they've posted something new it's always really inspiring and daunting at the same time, because they're so good.

Clio is amazing. Amaaaazing. I can't get enough of it. It all has such personality, and it feels almost larger-than-life, if that makes any sense? When she does sequential stuff, the pacing is always tight and the images incredibly dynamic; when she does illustration stuff, it's always gorgeous (unless intentionally not-so) and vibrant and so engaging. She has such a way with characters that I really, really envy. I just love her stuff omg ♥

Some random examples of her work (I can't pick favorites):

If you want to find more of her work, there's
her website
her blog
her livejournal !

She also has a webcomic that's currently on hiatus, but unlike most webcomics that are on hiatus she's actually actively working on it, so yay!

I love Clio. And so should you!

Vera is amazing too. She has such a distinct style that you see one of her illustrations and know it's hers, but at the same time it's fluid and changable enough that she can pick up work elsewhere and really thrive with it (such as storyboarding Coraline). It's gorgeous and her 20s-40s inspired style and the frequent circus-fare hnnnrgh. It's sogood.

She's also working on a graphic novel and her preview here looks sogood:

If you want to see more of her stuff, there's
her website
her blog
her livejournal

She is awesome.

Jen was the first person to really inspire me to shift away from copying anime pictures and try developing a style of my own. I was first introduced to her stuff via her old webcomic Strings of Fate, which sadly is not up on the internet anymore. From there I've just been silently stalking her, for which I have no remorse.

Her stuff is so gorgeous and mature-looking, and there's always a sense of a story in her pictures. And did I mention they're pretty? Because they really are.

She is also working on a graphic novel, but sadly the preview image I remember seeing is something I can no longer find. Sigh :(

For more of Jen, you need only look at her
her website
her blog
her livejournal

Also, check out the sketchblog they did along with Bill Mudron, Erika Moen and Dylan Meconis (who are also awesome)!

i've got an idea!

Hey, buddies of mine who read this journal! I had an idea while I was showering that I think would be pretty awesome.

I like to find out about cool things, and I can only assume the same is true for other people. I know I'm often unaware of awesome things that everyone else loves (especially internet things), and stuff I immediately think of when I think of "awesome" other people might not know about. SO! My idea is this:

The 10th of every month being an awesome pimp day.

What does that mean? It means that on the 10th you make a livejournal post dedicated to something you find awesome and want other people to be aware of. It doesn't matter what it is. It could be an artist, or a comic, or a book, or some music, or something cute you saw. Anything is game, so long as you find it pretty darn spiffy!

It is about giving! Giving, and receiving, and above all else sharing things that are cool. What more could people want?

So! Is anyone interested?

SURPRISE

I have a meme. Startling, I know. Taken from aeirol:

You shout 'WORDS!' at me, then I reply with five words that I think are related to you somehow. You then have to post those words and an explanation of why I might have said them about you.

From aeirol:

Artistic: W-well, I am majoring in art so I hope I'm at least a little bit artistic!

Creative: I do really enjoy building/creating worlds and characters and coming up with zany adventures for them, ranging from angsty to just plain ridiculous. So...creative!

Laid back: I will say, one of my traits that I think is pretty positive is that I'm a (fairly) easy-going person, and I'm both happy and flattered that someone agrees with that!

Sociable: I...guess I'm pretty good at interacting with various people whether I'm really comfortable or not? I dunno. Maybe that was arrogant of me.

Whimsical: I like silly things, ranging from Storm Hawks to One Piece to True Blood. S-so maybe that's why? I dunno I'm pretty dumb as far as this goes!

From spiderstars:

Narcolepsy: I like to sleep. A lot. And due to the anemia I get tired probably more often than the typical human. I love naps! So...that's probably why?

Expansive Imagination: I'm really flattered by this, but I think it ties into the above creative stuff. I really like coming up with characters and stuff, so...yeah.

Laid-Back: I'm pretty easy to get along with, and I'm pretty chill about most things.

Stoic: In emotional issues I'm pretty ... heartless. I don't really like to get emotional, or show I'm upset, so the answer is to be an emotionless statue. It works!

Hard Work: Uh...well I'm flattered this is here. I guess when art projects come along, or something else I'm really engaged in, I'll go to crazy lengths to get it done well and on time (see: children's book class). Maybe that's why?

(bonus) Total Art Whore: Uhm...I'll forgive a lot of subpar stuff (movies in particular) if I found something sorta artistic with it. Plus I just plain like art :B

I also spent more time than I should revamping the format of my memories, so while it is not complete it is far more visually appealing and organized. Yay!

readin'

Something I did last summer and appear to be doing this summer is reading like a fiend. Okay, perhaps that is a lie as I'm sure others have been reading far more than I have, BUT. With my lifeguarding job I'm typically given ample time to read, something which I want to encourage. Maybe it's to brag, maybe it's for my own self satisfaction, but here's a list of books I will have read by Summer 2009.

Finished

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (374 pages)
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare (485 pages)
Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex by Mary Roach (319 pages)
The Dark Is Rising Sequence: Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper (243 pages)
The Dark Is Rising Sequence: The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper (244 pages)
The Dark Is Rising Sequence: Greenwitch by Susan Cooper (131 pages)
The Dark Is Rising Sequence: The Grey King by Susan Cooper (165 pages)
The Dark Is Rising Sequence: Silver On The Tree by Susan Cooper (274 pages)
City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare (453 pages)
City of Glass by Cassandra Clare (541 pages)
The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan (322 pages)
Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife by Mary Roach (311 pages)
Protector of the Small: Page by Tamora Pierce (229 pages)
Stockholm by Bryony Lavery (77 pages)
Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk (260 pages)
Cold Snap by Thom Jones (228 pages)
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard (128 pages)
Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce (216 pages)
In the Hand of the Goddess by Tamora Pierce (209 pages)
Woman Who Rides Like A Man by Tamora Pierce (228 pages)
Lioness Rampant by Tamora Pierce (308 pages)

Currently Reading

To Read

Comics Read

Salamander Dream by Hope Larson
Gray horses = Chevaux gris by Hope Larson
French Milk by Lucy Knisley
The War At Ellesmere by Faith Erin Hicks
Scott Pilgrim's precious little life by Bryan Lee O'Malley
Scott Pilgrim vs. the world by Bryan Lee O'Malley
Scott Pilgrim & the infinite sadness by Bryan Lee O'Malley
Scott Pilgrim gets it together by Bryan Lee O'Malley
Runaways: Dead Wrong
Flight (volume 1)
Scott Pilgrim vs. the universe by Bryan Lee O'Malley
Swallow You Whole by Nate Powell
DAR Volume 1 by Erika Moen
Drawn To You by Erika Moen, Lucy Knisley
Comic Book Tattoo
Zombies Calling by Faith Erin Hicks
Radiator Days by Lucy Knisley
Skim by Mariko Tamaki, Jillian Tamaki

Comics To Read

???

If you want my opinion on anything I've read, or if you want to leave suggestions, feel free to comment! It was yesterday so it's a little belated, but! I hope it was a good one!

Edit: oops, I guess I should go ahead and include other updates.
book meme

So I find it hilarious that I was the first one to find this meme, but the last to fill it out

What's your bookstore?
Uhh…it really comes down to what’s most convenient at the time, though I do have preferences. For my comic and manga needs, Waldenbooks in the mall works just fine; for general book needs, I’m a Borders gal; for cheap stuff, Half Price Books. But I’m more willing to pay for convenience than to shop around and go further for something cheaper, gotta say.

Hardback or Paperback?
Uh…I’m not too picky, but if I can I think I like paperback more? Just…it’s cheaper so when I beat it up I don’t feel too bad about it. Just seems more simple.

Bookmark or Dogear?
Uh…well, I always TRY to start with a bookmark but it inevitably falls out/gets lost/disappears, so I’ve fallen into dogearing it. Or I just close the book and search the next morning for the page I left off at.

Keep, Throw Away or Sell?
Keeeep, unless I’ve really outgrown it and then I sell dem bitches. I don’t give stuff away, unless it’s a gift I bought for them. It’s a loan with an expectation I’ll get it back! But yeah, keep. Never know when you’ll wanna reread them!

Read with dustjacket or remove it?
With the dustjacket. I’m…lazy and honestly I never really think about it? And more often than a book mark or a dogear I’ll use the flap as a pagemarker. Besides, where do you put the dustjacket that it doesn’t look misplaced? And I’d get distracted by looking at the cover art and comparing it to how much I’ve read, or how ugly it is. So it stays on!

Short story or novel?
Uh…depends? Though rule of thumb is that I rarely read short stories on my own, and it’s typically a novel so…take what you will?

Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
Once again, both. Though I’m more willing to go with ‘stop reading when tired’ when it’s something enjoyable; if it’s something I’m toiling through, I’ll make myself get to a chapter break. Like a goal to reach and everything.

Buy or Borrow?
Buyyyyy. I go with the whole consumerist deal—I like having my own copy. That way (since I’m a pretty slow reader) I don’t feel rushed to get it back to a friend or the library. Half the time I have to wander across something anyway; someone telling me I have to read it makes me less inclined than if I pull it off the shelf and start to read. That’s what happened with the Harry Potter books. If I’d read it when my dad first got it for me, I’d have been into it for the first book’s release, instead of the third. So…buy.

Buying choice: Book Reviews, Recommendation or Browse?
The last two. It never crosses my mind to look at book reviews until after I’ve read a book (which means I really enjoyed it and I’m looking to see what other people thought/what possibilities there are for more) but recommendations are ALWAYS noted, even if they aren’t followed immediately, and browsing is always good by me. I DO get tricked by a good cover, so that’s what I’ll typically look for first.

Tidy ending or Cliffhanger?
Uhm…well, I hate cliffhangers (unless the next book is right next to me) so tidy I guess? But I mean, whatever works best for the book. I mean, if I needed a tidy ending I wouldn’t like American Psycho as much as I do.

Morning reading, Afternoon reading or Nighttime reading?
Whenever-I-feel-like-it read? Though more the latter than the former. Though I have a generous definition of morning anymore hahahha.

Standalone or Series?
Standalone, because I HATE waiting for the next book. It’s why I resist most series if I can—unless it’s finished, I’m typically leery of starting something new. Unless I don’t know before I start to read, in which case I find out the date of publication for the next book and burn it into my memory.

New or used?
New. I’m fickle and vain, and I like reading something fresh and new. It feels more personal I guess.

Last 5 books you read
01. The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins
02. Hero Perry Moore
03. Gods Behaving Badly Marie Phillips
04. The Dancing Girl Hasan Shah
05. The Diary of Lady Murasaki Lady Murasaki

Next 5 books you want to read
01. Terrier Tamora Pierce
02. The Dark is Rising Susan Cooper
03. Bonk Mary Roach
04. Demons Fyodor Dostoyevsky
05. City of Bones Cassandra Clare [omfg don’t judge me it could be hilarious]

QUICKFIRE

The first novel you remember reading
u-uh…the first Animorphs book probably?

A book that changed your life
Uhm…I-I dunno? Well, Animorphs and Goosebumps were the trigger that made me love reading, versus hating it, so that’s an important change in my life right?

A book that made you cry (REALLY cry, not just a shed tear)
None, for I am heartless.

A book that made you brood for days
American Psycho. Just…god. That book. It was so good, and so horrible, but so good and the ending hnnnrgh. It was the most intense read of my life, but I’m so glad I did. The movie is pretty faithful to the idea of the book, but it barely touches on any of the squick or gore or discomfort that comes from reading the book. It was great, but that ending had me hung up for a couple days.

A book that made you laugh
Anything by David Sedaris has. But generally I rarely laugh at books? You’ll get like…a snort and that’s it. A quiet one at that. But David Sedaris is so hilarious.

Of course, any book by Jon Scieszka (and illustrated by Lane Smith) will typically make me laugh out loud at first reading, so there’s that.

A book you have signed by the author
I don’t really have any, besides one book by the father of my fifth grade teacher. I never read it, and I can’t even remember what it was called. I feel sorta bad about that.

A book where you have drowned in the language
The Idiot and Crime and Punishment, oddly enough. It’s so…blunt and frank for the most part, but the stuff he says and how he writes it have had me pausing and thinking “this is beautiful” more than once, so Dostoyevsky it is.

A book you have lost
If I’ve lost it, I’ve likely forgotten it. Though one I lost and I doubt I’ll ever forget is The Moorchild by Eloise McGraw, which Catey lent to me when we were kids and I lost. Still feel sorta bad, but not really anymore.

A book given to you by your father
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. He’d meant it as a sort of read-and-talk-about deal, though he never finished the one he chose. It was…difficult, but I came to really appreciate it once I’d finished it.

A book given to you by your mother
Cowboy and Octopus by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. It was a beautiful book that I appreciate her getting for me big time.

A book given to you by a friend
Uhhhhmmmm…I dunno how much it counts as a book, but spiderstars gave me a Caravaggio book for either my birthday or Christmas (it all sorta blends together hahahha).
